Chapter-by-Chapter Review: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

Chapter by chapter review of Of Poseidon!
See the reviews of the previous chapters here.

Chapter five and six

I'll be doing my very first chapter-by-chapter review. Yes yes, y'all. Quite obviously, since I'll be discussing each chapter in depth, there will be spoilers. Beware!

(Can you tell I'm having fun with fonts, by the way? Because I am. Very much.)

I'm pretty surprised: this chapter is actually decent! Emma is grieving Chloe and feels pretty numb. It's actually sort of believable, and no rage-inducing things happened. But - and this is an important but - Galen goes to the same school as Emma. He has the exact same classes. And he, of course, is staring at Emma all throughout class. And, of course, the teacher told him to sit next to Emma for the rest of the week (at least). How very surprising. As soon as Galen sits down next to Emma, she feels tingles. While I know it's probably some kind of mermaid we-can-sense-each-other thing, it's remarkably close to insta-love. Of course, Emma also has problems concentrating on the class because of Galen's nearness. Now, and this is an actual, serious questions, have any of you ever experienced that? Not being able to concentrate on anything except your crush/boyfriend/hot person next to you?

In this chapter, we also find out Emma's last name. Now, you could say I'm nitpicking because I obviously already hate this book, but her last name is McIntosh. Is it just me, or does that sound dangerously like Macintosh? Did Banks not realize this, or does she perhaps have a preference for Apple products? Or was this because she had no inspiration? Now, if it's an actual, commonly used name, please ignore this paragraph. Since I live in the Netherlands, I'm not really familiar with American/English/Australian last names. So, if it's actually normal, please correct me.

Okay, this chapter is rage-inducing. We're with Galen and the unnatural writing style again (no, I will not let that go. It's weird.) and he meets up with his sister, Rayna. Then throw a guy named Toraf into the mix. This guy. I hate him already. Apparently he's Rayna's mate, and she doesn't want him. He says that he's followed her around since they were little kids, which is not sweet but creepy. And then, Rayna explains how she didn't want to be mated because it would take her freedom away, and that she told Toraf so. What happened? He became her mate. Now isn't that nice of him. That's not all. Rayna yells at him because of this - which is perfectly understandable, if you ask me - and everyone treats her like a joke or a little kid that's throwing a tantrum. What? Her freedom is apparently taken by a guy she doesn't want, and they laugh it off. This is a serious issue, and they treat her like that? SMH. And even worse is that Rayna will probably fall for Toraf in the end and have a HEA, without ever mentioning this again. And oh my God, it's even worse. Apparently, Toraf had the two of them mated without her knowing of it. This guy is SUCH a jerk, I want to punch him in the face. How dare he do something like that? And Galen is just grinning and thinking that it's funny. I am SO angry right now, you don't even know. Oh my God, I am so angry. I wish they would all die now.

After that there's a huge info dump , and I don't even care because I am still ANGRY. Also, speshul snowflake Emma has violet eyes. And apparently, Galen has 'bonded' with Emma. Which basically means INSTANT LOVE.

Chapter three and four

I'll be doing my very first chapter-by-chapter review. Yes yes, y'all. Quite obviously, since I'll be discussing each chapter in depth, there will be spoilers. Beware!

I splash enough water in Chloe's face to put out a small house fire. I don't want to drown her, just exfoliate her eyeballs with sea salt.
I know, our dearest Emma is just being 'funny', but she really irks me. In fact, this quote is pretty  accurate in terms of my feelings for the protagonist so far. She's just funny-not-funny and annoying. Sigh. I hope it'll get better, but somehow, I doubt it...

And back to the black best friend, who I actually sort of liked. But here we go, she's pretty stereotypical already. Only talking about sex, fake nails, etc. Guess what just happened? SHE GOT EATEN BY A SHARK. RAGE. The only good thing about this book so far, the only diversity, GOT EATEN BY A SHARK. It's official. I hate this book.

A Galen-POV chapter again, which means that I immediately dislike it. It just feels so incredibly unnatural, like the author is talking to little kids or something. "Galen doesn't have time to wait for any adolescent savior." "Galen stops." Et cetera. I mean, is it just me or does this sound like a little kid's bedtime story?

This chapter also brings on the insta-love again. Galen sees Emma's friend being eaten by a shark, and the only thing he can think of is how "breathtaking" Emma is.

Breathtaking? Rayna's right - you've lost your mind!

At least he's right about that.

When we're a little farther into the chapter, Emma's snowflake-ness is being established. She just told the shark to go away  and it listened to her, which completely baffled Galen. Oh yes, Emma's so very special (and just like every other special-snowflake YA heroine).

The chapter ends with Galen considering to kidnap Emma. All in a joking manner of course, but that isn't the kind of stuff you joke about. Just the fact that he thinks about it sort of creeps me out.

DNF Review: Hereafter by Tara Hudson

Hereafter by Tara Hudson
Can there truly be love after death?

Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.

Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.

Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, Hereafter is a sensation you won't want to miss.
Title: Hereafter
Author: Tara Hudson
Series: Hereafter #1
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: June 7th 2011

Rating: 1 of 5 stars

Thoughts:

"Tell me what happened after you died."

I knew that the ratings for this were low. I knew that, and I'm solely to blame for picking this up anyway. Well, me and that cover. Can you take one look at that and not want to read this? So I picked this up and started to read. It was a horrible, horrible mistake. In fact, Hereafter has the honor of being my first Did Not Finish ever!

From the very beginning, this book is weak. Amelia is dull and has no personality whatsoever. All she does, from page one to page 212, where I DNF'ed this, is whining. I get that being dead isn't a party, but surely there are more useful things to do than complain about everything and never taking any action? She also says things like this:

What could be scarier than me?

*snort* A whole lot, let me tell you.

At least those would have been my thoughts were I capable of any.

Her words, not mine.

Things really start to go downhill when she sees Joshua, a boy, drowning in the river. He's dead for a second, he sees her, and from that moment she's completely smitten. I'm not kidding: this book has the worst case of insta-love I have ever seen. I'll let the quote speak for itself:

Of course I knew his importance now. I knew it deep in my suddenly very awake core. I knew nothing about him - not his age, not his last name, the way his voice would sound if it spoke my name. But I knew things had changed for me. They had changed forever.

Are you freaking kidding me? She says this at the end of chapter two. After she's known him for literally ten (!) minutes.

And around the start of the second half of the book, Amelia says this: (and for the record, Joshua is sleeping here)

"I think I might... you know... love you, by the way."  "Too," Joshua whispered back groggily. "Love."

All they have done so far is make out. That's it! She doesn't know any more about him than she did at the end of chapter two, except for his music tastes. And now it's suddenly love? Get out. Get out. And don't even get me started on the fact that Joshua apparently loves her so much he even says it in his sleep.

*minor spoiler for this paragraph* And then there's a scene where Amelia finds out her dad died. She's all sad and her mom's alone now. I can understand that, and for one second I genuinely felt for Amelia. And then she starts making out with Joshua. Things even get all hot and heavy. Excuse me? Excuse me? You just found out your dad died and you decided that making out with yur boyfriend is the appropiate thing to do? This was the point were I officially called bullshit on this book and DNF'ed it.

This book is extremely dull. I got 50% in and I still saw no sign of any plot. And I'm assuming that this is  a plot-based book, since the characters aren't nearly strong enough to carry the story. In fact, the characters were cardboard cut-outs with no personality at all. The only person I liked was Ruth, who tried to kill Amelia.

The clichés in this book are overwhelming. There's the mean girl who showed up once to show us how everybody is after Joshua. Every word that leaves her mouth is 'purred', or with a 'throaty and deep' voice. Then there's a scene where Amelia and Joshua are in the car and he pulls his shirt over his head (because his shirt was inside out. *rolls eyes*). Amelia goes all:

I now had a full view of his chest and abs, and, suddenly, I couldn't remember how to breathe.

I'm sorry, but have any of you ever had trouble breathing because you saw a man's chest? I mean, there are lots of movies and TV-series in which the male actor gets to show off his abs at least once, and I've never sat before the TV grabbing at my throat and going "can't... breathe...". It might be different if it's your boyfriend, although I seriously doubt it.

In short, I wouldn't recommend this book. Hereafter is a dull mix of all possible clichés with a seriously bad case of insta-love.

Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls, #1)

Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls, #1)Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…

While it didn't steal my heart, it will probably haunt my dreams.. or nightmares.

Because Born at Midnight has the whole package: slut shaming, insta-attraction, more slut shaming and a plot that spends its time mostly elsewhere.

I'll start with this book greatest issue: the slut shaming. God, it was horrible.

"Beside him-or she should say plastered against him-sashayed
                        his new slutty girlfriend."

This 'new slutty girlfriend' is someone Kylie, the main character, has never spoken to. Yet the poor girl is called a slut, bang toy and screw toy. Oh, and:

"In less than five minutes, Trey would be trying to get in
her panties. And from the too-low-cut blouse and too-short
skirt the girl wore, it appeared he wouldn't have to try hard."

What has this girl done? Nothing but getting in a relationship with Kylies ex-jerkboyfriend. Such a crime!

Not only is wearing short skirts or shorts slutty and so wrong, having sex is also very eeeeeeevil! Just look at Kylies "best friend" (who is promptly forgotten after Kylie arrives at the camp) Sara! Have sex and you'll end up like her. Or at least, that's what Born at Midnight likes you to think!

"More as in Kylie had a sneaking suspicion that Sara longed
to rush Kylie to join the partying-non-virgin ranks."

"Then she recalled how Sara had given in to Brad's "needs"
-Brad, who was the love of Sara's life-yet, within two weeks
of giving in, the love of Sara's life had dumped her. What
                    was so special about that?

Since then, Sara had dated four other guys, and she'd slept
two of them. Now, Sara had stopped talking about sex being
                   special."

Isn't this just a lovely message? Boys are only after sex and if you 'give in', you'll end up like that.

Oh and by the way, pregnancy..

"It happened to everyone an anyone having unprotected sex. Or
         sex with a faulty condom."

And the preaching and slut-shaming isn't all. Kylie's a bitch. Sorry folks, she is. I mean:

"Somebody really needed to subscribe to a fashion magazine
           or two."

"Lordie, can you say freaks? One girl had her hair dyed three
different colors-pink, lime green, and jet black. Another
girl wore nothing but black-black lipstipck, black eye
shadow, black pants, and a black long-sleeve shirt. Hadn't
the goth look gone out of style? Where was this girl getting
her fashion tips? Hadn't she read that colors were in? That
        blue was the new black?"

It's not like wearing black can be a fashion choice. Nope, according to Kylie you haven't read the magazines, or you're rebellous! Isn't she lovely?

Then, of course, there is the love square. Yes, square. Unfortunately, you read that right. Because all the boyyzz are fawning over her. There's Trey, the ex and jerk first class, and there's Derek, who can manipulate her emotions, and Lucas, who killed her cat, but not really. I choose....

freakin' no-one!

The curse words in this book are annoying as hell. They say 'bat-shit' but also 'crappers'. They say 'Jesus', but 'Lordie'. And they replace hell with Hades. Oh hell no! Hades isn't the same as hell. He's a god. Not. The. Same.

Oh, and did you know that shapeshifters sparkle when they shift? Hey Twilight, I didn't see you there!

But I did like Miranda and Della. Really, I loved Della. She was great and interesting! I liked Miranda too - and then she lets her friend almost die because she's having a bitchfight with Fredericka, a character with no depth who is only there so everyone can hate her.

It was a really fast read, so it's got that going for it.

All in all...

No.

A Beautiful Dark (A Beautiful Dark, #1)

A Beautiful Dark (A Beautiful Dark, #1)A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

A Beautiful Dark had an interesting premise, some great ideas, and is extremely disappointing.

Even though it's not very original, the idea of an agent of good and one of evil trying to win over a girl is good. With some slow burning romance, ass-kicking and an awesome heroine, it would be pretty perfect.

What we get is an unlikeable herione, way too much clichés, insta-love and a cheap Twilight-ripoff.

There is a checklist for crappy YA novels these days. Let's see if A Beautiful Dark can get all the checks!

- Unlikable herione

Check, check, double check. Skye is a whiny teenager. She's so very special, but instead of going all "Hell yeah! Let's go kick some ass!" she's just "Fuck my life. Fuck my miserable life. I have powers, ewh! I have a very crappy life. I have two hot boys who want me. Ewh. My parents died, fuck my life!"

Sigh.

She's also Bella Swan the Second. Look at these quotes:

"My skin looked even paler than usual."

Why do they all have to be so pale?

" "Okay, wait, I know you also said no presents," Cassie shouted above the music as we worked our way through the throng, "but I have no self-control." "You better not have spent-" "

Guess who also loathes presents, especially when people paid money for it? You guessed right, Bella Swan!

Also, she gets some kind of iPod adapter thing so she can listen to it in her car. Bella got a new radio for her car. Hmm. Must be a coincidence, no?

- Herione doesn't want her powers

Check. So, Skye's got some pretty awesome powers. I mean, control over the elements? Healing? Pretty badass. But instead she's just:
"I have powers! But fuck my life. It's so very different now that I know I have powers. I wish I'd get my old life back. But I have powers. Oh no!"

- Slutty best friend, not relevant to the plot

Check again!

"I never reacted this way to guys I'd just met. It was Cassie who was boy crazy."

Of course, Cassie's only there to make Skye look good. Also, without Cassie, Skye doesn't have a life.

- Love triangle with two guys, one the 'bad' guy, the other brooding and serious

Guess what? Check. So there's Asher, who's the bad guy and basically a fucking jerk. Why do they always have to think making the MC jealous is the perfect way to get her? Why? I'd be more like, "fuck off now, you've made your point clear." But of course it works. Sigh.

Then there's Devin. He's so very serious and brooding and in luurve with Skye.

- Stalking equals love

Of course, how could I forget? If someone stalks you, it means they are so very in love with you.

"You watch me sleep?" "Once or twice." He smiled.

So very creepy romantic. (Also, guess what Edward does? He watches Bella sleep too! Yay!)

"I know a lot more about you than you know."

Flattering, isn't he?

- 'Parent' who's always conviently away

Check. Aunt Jo is always going out to hike. So very convenient!

- (only add in case of wanting to rip off Twilight) The human boy who's hopelessly in love with our protagonist

There's Ian. He's so in love with Skye, because of course it'd be weird if only two guys fell for her! He's a lot like Matt (or what was his name again?) from Twilight. They're both in love with the main character.

So, A Beautiful Dark's got every single thing! Hurray!

Also:

I didn't feel any older on the day after my birthday than I had on the day before it.

You don't say?

Since he'd arrived, I was having a difficult time concentrating in all of my classes, but for some reason, history, with its rote memorization, had been the hardest.

Because when you're attracted to a guy you're supposed to fail all your classes! please note that this girl wants to go to Columbia.

[the teacher] actually blushed and patted her mousy brown hair that frizzed out in a crown around her face.

Why are teachers always displayed as ugly? Sure, at my school there are some who aren't exactly attractive, but also young teachers, and good-looking ones. So I don't understand why teachers (who are very important, by the way) are always displayed as old, ugly and naïve creatures.

So.. this wasn't really my cup of tea. Too much clichés, way too much. But since I already have the sequel, I'll read it sometime.

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Actual rating: 1.5 stars.

Oh God. Where do I even start?

So, first I want to make a statement. Stealing is NOT okay. Stealing is NOT okay. Plagiarism is a form of stealing and therefore also NOT okay. This woman, Cassandra Clare, is earning buckloads of money with J.K. Rowling's ideas. And that, once more, is NOT okay.

And boy, is Clare using Rowling's ideas. I've already gotten over the characters in my review of City of Bones. The prison of Silent City is a weak rip-off of Azkaban. (Great prison, by the way, when just about everyone is able to walk in! Good idea to lock the worst criminals in there!) Valentine is an even weaker rip-off of Voldemort. But where Voldemort was a scary, scary, really bad guy, Valentine is just laughable. Every time he treathened someone, I just wanted to pat him on the head and say: "It'll be okay, Vallie! Just reign in your little temper and count to ten!" I think it's needless to say that that's not a good sign.

Then there's Jace.

Of course we all know Jace's supposed to be a mini-Draco. But I also felt like Clare was trying to make Jace the new Adrian Ivashkov. But where Adrian was arrogant but cute, Jace is arrogant and arrogant. Sorry Clare, but once again I say:

Also, everyone in the story is supposed to have a troubled past. Y'know, we all got bruises and that shit. And for some reason, everyone with said troubled past feels the need to tell us right away how troubled their past was. But I guess Clare doesn't know how to give characters depth otherwise.

Then there's the writing. Oh God. Oh God oh God oh God. It was so bad. Clare still uses every word that just pops into her minde in a simile. Let me give you some quotes, huh?

Isabelle shrugged philosophically.

How does one shrug "philosophically"? Are you supposed to shrug and scratch your beard at the same time?

Eyes like burning ice, (...)

Ice can't burn. If you put a flame and ice togheter, the ice will melt. It won't burn.

(...) its sound of old iron, (...)

Since when does iron, or old iron, have a sound? It might have a sound when scraped over something, but I've never seen some old iron that would suddenly just go *screeeeeeeeeech*.

Isabelle's smile was like a whispered secret.

...

Her eyes were clear blue as glass, (...)

Glass isn't blue. Unless, of course, you've got colored glass, but somehow I doubt that was what Clare meant.

He looked like a lion in a trap.

...

The sky had turned to gunmetal (...)

Pretty hard to breathe like that, huh?

"You're starting to sound like a dolphin, do you know that? Stop."

... wut?

Then there's the plot, or rather, the way the story flows. Clare wants to put some sexy Jace/Clary moments in there, but she doesn't know how. So she does what?

"That's what I don't understand!" Clary burst out. "Why did she make you kiss me? The Queen, I mean. Why force us to do that?"

Because it's an easy way to make you kiss Jace! That's why!

I also wondered if there is being hinted at some Simon/Jace activity,

I would like that. Just leave the super speshul Clare Clary alone, guys!

I'll put the quote in a spoiler, due to.. spoilers. (even though the thing I'm going to spoil is painfully obvious form the start, but hey, whatever)

(view spoiler)[ Simon's drinking Jace's blood in this scene:
But Simon wasn't hurting [Jace] -not really- the pain that had started out sharp faded to a dull burn, pleasant the way the burn of the stele was sometimes pleasant. A drowsy sense of peace stole through Jace's veins and he felt his muscles relax; the hands that had been trying to push Simon away a moment ago now pressed him closer.

*wink wink* (hide spoiler)]

Clare still isn't good at giving hints. I quote from my review of City of Bones: And.. the predictability. I saw every plot twist coming. This might also be because of Clare. Every time she drops a hint, she doesn't just drop the hint but also dances in front of it, singing: "LOOK! A hint! A hint! Right here, you see?". She's still like that. Except she is now dancing nake- no wait, now that I think of it, I don't want that mental image.

Like the hints involving (view spoiler)[ Simon being a vampire (hide spoiler)]. Painfully obvious. Or this one:

(view spoiler)[ "Did the Inquisitor's son die? Is that why she's like this?" (...) "How did you figure that out?"

Because it's obvious! Too obvious!

I also think Jace isn't Valentine's son (this I already thought in City of Bones.) He's an angel, if I'm correct (which is why Clary always dreams of him as an angel). But I hear we're supposed to find that out in book 4. Oops! (hide spoiler)]

But, back to the writing. It was unnatural. For example:

"Then he just left Simon lying there, like some toy he'd ripped all the insides out of so he had no use for it anymore."

No-one talks like that! No-one! Especially not teenage girls!
Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

And for the second time that night, a shadow passed between [Jace] and death.

Well, damn.

This is Valentine talking to Jace:

"And you have that quality that causes others to give their lives for you without question."

What? I certainly never would give up my freaking life for that jerk! And I can't believe others would.

And poor Simon. Clary just keeps using him. But wait, Clary's speshul! So she can, right?

So..

I think it goes without saying that I didn't enjoy this book. Well, it made me laugh, but for the wrong reason.

Silver (Bandia, #1)

Silver (Bandia, #1)Silver by Talia Vance
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Actual rating: 1.5 stars

*sigh*

Oh, Silver, what to do with you?
First, let's get this out of the way: if you want a good book, this is not it.

The Characters

Ugh. All the women in this book are portrayed as slutty sex toys, except of course for our lovely, stunning, beautiful, great-looking, did I mention beautiful? protagonist Brianna. I was really disturbed by this. This book was written by a woman. And yet every single girl is displayed as a slut? No. Not just no, but hell no.

Brianna's "friends" are only there to make Brianna look good. She has two friends, who are both quite slutty and all over the boyzzz. Why are these three friends? Don't ask me.

The boys in this book are all total pervs. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is making remarks about how good-lookin' Brianna is and vaguely implying sexual things. The love interest is supposed to stand out by not being pervy (or so I think), but is miserably failing. At one point he says he's happy he's learned to control himself, because otherwise he didn't know what he would have done to Brianna the first time he saw her. That's just creepy. Again I say, hell no.

The slut-shaming

Yes, it deserves its own department. Because God, there is a lot of slut shaming going on. A few quotes to illustrate my point:

"Did your date with the Boobsie Twins fall through?"

"Fishnet leans against Blake's SUV in a too-short skirt and too-low top. A second girl with round, fake boobs whispers in her ear as they watch Blake approach."

Who are you to judge them, Brianna, just because they hang out with your one true love? Who the hell are you?

Ugh.

It's just.. ugh. This whole book is ugh. I mean, we've got a stalker. We've got slut-shaming. We've got the-whole-world-is-slutty-except-for-me. We've got instalove. We've got quotes like this:

""Pardon me for saying so, but you don't seem like his type." what is that supposed to mean? So I'm not dumb, snobby or slutty... Oh."

Excuse me? Excuse me? Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

Also, apparently girls only like bad boys. Loving and caring boyfriends are absolutely out of the question. This is a scene of Brianna talking to a boy who likes one of her slutty friends:

" "I don't know. Could you try being more of an asshole?" "Why would I do that?" "I'm trying to help you out here." I don't know how to explain it. (...) "Wait. Are you saying that Christy would like me better if I wasn't so-" "Nice." "

And this works.

This is just wrong on so many levels, I can't even.

And the worst thing about this?
I want to read the sequel.
