ARC Review: All Our Yesterdays by Christin Terrill

All Our Yesterdays by Christin Terrill
Em is locked in a bare, cold cell with no comforts. Finn is in the cell next door. The Doctor is keeping them there until they tell him what he wants to know. Trouble is, what he wants to know hasn't happened yet. Em and Finn have a shared past, but no future unless they can find a way out. The present is torture - being kept apart, overhearing each other's anguish as the Doctor relentlessly seeks answers. There's no way back from here, to what they used to be, the world they used to know. Then Em finds a note in her cell which changes everything. It's from her future self and contains some simple but very clear instructions. Em must travel back in time to avert a tragedy that's about to unfold. Worse, she has to pursue and kill the boy she loves to change the future.

Thoughts:

"[...] sometimes people have to die for the greater good."

Normally I begin my reviews with a little summary of the book (no spoilers, of course). However, I'm not going to do that here because everything is a spoiler. Even the most basic things. Sorry about that, but all you really need to know about this book is that YOU MUST READ IT.

I went into this expecting an amazing read. It's a dangerous thing to do, because very often, the novel doesn't meet your expectations. All Our Yesterdays didn't just meet my expectations, it took my expectations away, threw them in a trash can and said, "really? I'm way better than that." And it is. This book is so amazing - this won't be a coherent review. I'll just ramble and gush and tell you over and over again that you should read this. Oh yeah, you should.

The characters were great - all of them. They were layered and complicated and real. Em and Finn were my definite favorites, but I loved the rest of the cast too. The villain in the story isn't just some evil man who has plans for the world because of... reasons. No, the 'villain' is a complicated character who wants to do good but fails. He is determined, and that determination will be his downfall. Terrill managed to write his character in such a way that you're both rooting for him and wanting him to disappear (but not really, because you love him).

All of the characters in the book also received a good amount of character growth. I was amazed, because this too, is a complicated thing. But each and every character started out good and then slowly reached amazing. They learn to accept themselves. Because this novel isn't just about time travel badassery, it also shows us that accepting yourself is a very important thing to do, that loving yourself is a good thing to do.

Speaking of the time travel, I loved how it was done. Terrill gave us an actual explanation as to how everything worked. Even the paradoxes are solved in this novel. Now, I know that some of you won't accept All Our Yesterdays' solution, ut I didn't mind it. It was actually very good how there were paradoxes and they didn't give me a headache.

There is a romance in this book - two, actually. But the romances take a backseat to the plot. This is another reason I loved these characters. Em and Finn were able to say the sweetest things to each other and I was busy melting (because FINN, people. FINN.), and the next moment they could be all bussiness and aiming a gun at someone.

My mind is still reeling from the sheer perfection of that ending. It's badass and you're screaming and then you're crying and then you see a certain piece written in italics and then you're bawling your eyes out. Perfection, guys.

This book will make you feel every emotion. You will be shocked because the plot is that strong, you will be saying "awhh" because of the romance, and you will be crying because certain things happen. I can't tell you how much I recommend you this book. Just read it, and you will know what I mean.

--Thank you, Dysney Hyperion, for giving me a copy of All Our Yesterdays. No money or favours were exchanged to alter this review.--

  1. Really liked your review - especially this bit:
"My mind is still reeling from the sheer perfection of that ending. It's badass and you're screaming and then you're crying and then you see a certain piece written in italics and then you're bawling your eyes out." Now I'm itching to read that certain piece written in italics...
It's great that you were able to generate interest toward the book without giving anything out about it. (Not that I wasn't interested before...because I'm really looking forward to this novel!). Also, I knew there was a sequel in the making, but yours was actually the first review I read mentioning the "Cassandra Chronicles" title.

Yes, I saw it going up on Goodreads just before I posted this! It does seem like a logical series name, since Cassandra is pretty important.

      I hope you'll like this!

    2. I saw the title too, after posting here. And I usually don't trust largely hyped books (or better, they're usually not my thing - with a few exceptions), but this one...I'm sure I can't go wrong!

    3. I really loved this one, so I hope you will too! Fortunately this novel is all about the plot and not the romance, that usually makes a book - in my opinion - better. I really hope you will enjoy this one!
