Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Beginnings Of A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke And The Bookish.

This week's Top Ten is about your top ten favourite beginnings/endings of a book. Since I don't want to spoil everyone, I chose to do beginnings.

Since I'm not very good at remembering the first sentence of a book, I just grabbed a couple of books from my shelves and decided if I liked their beginnings or not. The list below is completely random, so it's not that I like the first listed the best:

1. What's Left Of Me by Kat Zhang

What's Left of Me (The Hybr...

Addie and I were born into the same body, our souls' ghostly fingers entwined before we gasped our very first breath.

I like it because, c'mon, they were born into the same body. That's a pretty awesome concept, if you ask me. It also immediately shows off Zhangs beautiful prose.

2. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke and Bone ...

Once upon a time, an angel and devil fell in love.

It did not end well.

Short, to the point, and it gives off a strong sense of foreboding as well. And it immediately shows that this isn't your typical Happily Ever After story.

3. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Before I Fall

They say that before you die your whole life flashes before your eyes, but that's not how it happened for me.

This definitely makes for a strong start, as it appears that our herione is dead.

4. Easy by Tammara Webber

Easy

I'm not going to type it all out, but that first chapter is intense. If you've read the book, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?

5. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

I've been locked up for 264 days.

I have nothing but a small notebook and a broken pen and the numbers in my head to keep me company. 1 window. 4 walls. 144 square feet of space. 26 letters in an alphabet I haven't spoken in 264 days of isolation.

6,336 hours since I've touched another human being.

For me, it's a strong start because I felt the MC's craziness right away. (And yes, I do think she's crazy). Mafi's writing style is quite unique and it shows already.

6. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Unearthly (Unearthly, #1)

Once again, I'm too lazy to type everything, but it starts off with Clara having her first vision. It draws me in, and I instantly want to read further! Especially because I really want to know what it all is about, and what her purpose is. (Yes, I'm still bitter that wasn't answered. SMH.)

7. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy (Vampire Ac...

I felt her fear before I heard her screams.

This is quite intruiging if you don't know about the bond yet. Why does the MC feel someone else's fear? What's happening? Tell me!

8. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

The Forest of Hands and Tee...

Yes, I am very lazy. No, I'm not going to type it all out. But it starts off with a little story about Mary's mother telling Mary about the ocean. It's interesting, and I want to know what this is all about. Also, zombies.

9. ....

Sorry guys, the Unconsecrated have eaten my brain. I really can't come up with more good beginnings (My brain's really gone, as I first typed 'endings'.).

What are your Top Ten Beginnings/Endings?
